What do I need to do to be Certified?

When and where are the games?

Games are for the Bloomington Athletic Association and all games are played within the City of Bloomington.

Most start times are 6:30pm for single-games or 6:00pm & 8:10pm for double-headers, Monday through Thursday.  Umpires would need to be at the field at least 20-minutes prior to the first-pitch.

There are some weekend games scheduled for Sundays, as well as make-ups and our annual BAA Weekend (first weekend in June) and Playoffs (last weekend in July) with varying times.

How long does it take to get Certified?

Below you will find a general timeline of how to become certified.  As the season gets closer more information is posted on this site under the News area.

What will I need to become an Umpire?

Basically you will only need to provide your uniform, and BAA will provide you with the equipment you require.  Although you may choose to purchase your own equipment at any time (remember, it is a tax write-off).  Here is a basic list of what you will need to provide:
  • Navy blue umpire hat (4 or 6-stitch bill)
  • Navy blue umpire shirt
    • BAA issued number on right sleeve
    • BAA patch on left sleeve
  • Heather or Charcoal gray slacks
    • Large enough for shin-guards UNDERNEATH
  • Black belt
  • Navy blue or gray ball bag
  • Protective cup
  • Black socks
  • Black shoes
  • Watch

What will BAA provide me as an Umpire?

  • Training and Forms to be completed
  • NFHS Rulebook
  • BAA Rulebook
  • Equipment
    • Face mask
    • Chest protector
      • Inside fitting, or
      • Outside balloon
    • Plate brush
    • Indicator
    • Shin-guards
    • Large canvas equipment bag

Is there anything else that I might need?

We suggest that our umpires bring the following items to all games as well:
  • Water/Gatorade/ect.
  • Bug spray
  • Towel
  • Note card(s)
  • Pen/Pencil
  • Cellular phone
    • This should be with you in case of emergency, but not on you or to be used during the game.

Where is the best place to get my uniform or equipment?

There are many places in which to purchase these items, but we have an arrangement with Between the Lines Officials Gear that gives all registered BAA Umpires a 7.5% discount.  Simply place a note with your order that says "Bloomington Athletic Association 7.5% discount" and it will be applied before your order is processed.

We have been working with Rex at BTL for a couple of years now and he does a great job.  Purchasing a shirt off-the-rack in town is typically about $30, plus you need to purchase numbers (3"-4") and then have those numbers and BAA patch sewn on.  BTL will ship the whole package to you for $40-$45, ready to be worn that night at a game.
